Wichita Tribal History Center

Museum Exterior

(Published in April 2018 issue of Wichita Tribal News)

The doors to the Wichita Tribal History Center will soon officially open, where the public can learn the story of the Kitikiti'sh directly from the Wichita people.

After an initial groundbreaking ceremony on January 28, 2016, the museum will now be open to the public with a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018.

Tribal members have been allowed to preview the museum's interiors since March 20, including the installations that are on display. At press time, there have been 90 tribal members walk through the doors as guests.

The staff for the museum includes the director, Dr. Timothy Baugh, and administrative assistant Cassandra McAdams. Baugh's work in museums and history centers includes being on the production staff of the "Wichita Memories" exhibit and has worked in the past with other tribes. McAdams transferred from Health Services, and she is also the leader of the Kitikiti'sh Little Sisters.

The Wichita Tribal History Center's exhibits and historical information were gathered under the direction of the Wichita Cultural Education Program's cultural planner, Gary McAdams.

The soft opening time period for tribal members continues through Friday, April 13, 2018. The days and times for viewing are 10 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Until the grand opening, tribal IDs must be presented for admittance. No pictures, food or drink are allowed, and the gift shop will not be open until the grand opening. Feedback from tribal members after viewing the exhibits is requested.

The grand opening will follow the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Special Council Meeting earlier in the day. Guests in attendance for the grand opening are then invited to the Wichita Community Building for a reception.
