Open Position: Communities in School Mid-America--Tribal Services Director

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to and directed by the Chief Strategy Officer of CIS of Mid-America, the Tribal Services Director of CIS of Mid-America, Inc. will be responsible for developing, sustaining and growing the Communities In Schools operations with Tribal Nations. The Tribal Services Director works in consultation with the CIS MidAm Resource Development Department to secure the financial resources necessary to operate existing programs and to expand CIS services. The Tribal Services Director is responsible for developing and maintaining community partnerships necessary to assure there is community oversight and involvement in the communities served in the region(s).  The Tribal Services Director, in consultation with the Communities In Schools of Mid-America, Inc. Chief Strategy Officer, provides operational oversight to programs and services being provided by site coordinators, with a goal of coordinating community resources to assist in the CIS activities and programs being conducted in schools.  The Tribal Services Director will work with CIS site staff and project leadership, National Indian Education Association technical assistance partners, the Special Programs Department Director or other relevant school district support department leadership, Site Principals and tribal school/community members to deliver the CIS model with a cultural-based focus designed to meet the needs of participating students, families and communities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Serve as executive for Tribal Schools operations

Lead shared responsibility for performance of Tribal sites

Lead all school district relationships

Lead and/or support the responsibilities of the CIS Tribal Initiative:

  • Community Partnerships
  • Resource Development/Fund Raising
  • Marketing and Public Relations
  • Managing and Developing CIS Sites
  • Providing and/or Brokering Quality Youth Programming and Services
  • Data Collection, Evaluation and Reporting

Functional Classification Summary

(P) Program - 80 Percent

(G) General and Management - 15 Percent

(F) Fund-raising - 5 Percent

 

Community Oversight

  • (P) Serve all staff functions for the Communities In Schools of Mid-America Tribal Advisory Council, including organizing meetings and involving Tribal Advisory Council members in community and school activities, programs and events
  • (P) Establish and maintain outstanding working relationships with key constituencies for Communities In Schools of Mid-America, Inc., including leading school administrators, business executives, local government officials, leaders of community service organizations and  community volunteers

 

Operational Oversight for School-Based Services

As directed by the CIS of Mid-America Chief Strategy Officer, the Tribal Services Director will provide oversight and support for the following areas:

  • P) The Tribal Services Director will conduct meetings with CIS site coordinators in their region to provide organizational guidance and support for school-based student support service
  • (P) The Tribal Services Director will coordinate community resources to support programs, events and activities being conducted by CIS site coordinator

 

Resource Development - Lead and support local efforts to:

  • (P) Maintain administrative relationship with funders, including completing and submitting all required reports
  • (G) As requested by the CIS MidAm Resource Development Department, prepare and submit all required funding reports and respond to request from funders
  • (G) Create periodic reports on resource development and share with both Chief Strategy Officer and CIS MidAm network Resource Development Team.
  • (F) Develop funding opportunities, research, oversee, prepare and submit grant proposals for public and private funding sources as needed

 

Event Management

  • (G) Coordinate all special events conducted by CIS Mid-America for Tribal Nations

  • (G) Advocates, promotes and practices cultural sensitivity and responsiveness in all day-to-day interactions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Previous supervisory experience.  Experience in working with schools especially with Native American populations and/or at-risk students, program implementation and administration, volunteer training, case management and proven leadership skills.  Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with school administrators, personnel, students, parents and the public.  Excellent communication skills both verbal and written. In addition, the Tribal Services Director shall have:

  • At least one to three years of management experience.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of computer applications such as word processing, Excel, electronic data tracking, Internet, Facebook, etc.
  • Demonstrated and superior written and oral communication skills.

 

Bachelor's Degree in social work, education, public administration, or related field required.  Master's Degree (MSW or similar) preferred. In connection with the administration of the Department of Education grant that funds this position, this employment opportunity is subject to the provisions of section 7(b) of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (Pub. L. 93-638), which gives employment preference to Native Americans. Additionally, preference will be given to individuals with personal lived expertise in Native American culture.
