Food Distribution Program

About the Program

The Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations was created by the Food Stamp Act of 1977 as an alternative to the Food Stamp Program because many Native Americans live in remote areas where food costs are excessively high and access to food stamp offices and grocery stores is often limited. FDPIR allows the Indian tribal organization to address both problems.

Food assistance and nutrition education are available at the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes’ Food Distribution building Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

Grocery Store

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Food Distribution Program provides services to participants in a grocery store setting. Participants are allowed to shop throughout the month according to their household size. The Grocery Store Concept which was established in 2009, provides FDP participants with a sense of dignity and freedom to choose what foods are taken for their families

Home deliveries are provided for homebound participants, individuals with no means of transportation, and the elderly and/or handicapped. Participants in need of home deliveries are asked to notify the FDP staff by calling the office at 405-247-9677 to schedule home delivery.

Community Garden

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Community Garden has been established since 2015. Funding is provided through the United States Department of Agriculture and allows the Food Distribution Program the ability to provide FDP participants or potential participants with additional fresh produce and herbs to enhance their already healthy FDP food package. The fresh produce and herbs grown in the garden are also utilized in cooking demonstrations and taste testing for participants and potential participants.

The Community Garden along with the Food Distribution Program focuses on the MyPlate and Low Sodium concept of making your plate half fruits and vegetables and using less sodium in your diet. For more information, please contact FDP staff at 405-247-9677.
