The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announces $17,993 for the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes to help individuals and families with rising home heating costs this winter.

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Department (“ARPA Department”) will oversee the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Office of Community Services (OCS) at the Administration for Children and Families (ACF).

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program provides financial assistance to eligible individuals/households pay home heating and cooling bills, prevent energy shutoffs, and new service deposit assistance.

The Low-Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) operates for Heating assistance the months of January to April or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Crisis assistance is also available, emergency basis only, until funds are exhausted. Crisis is considered when a tribal member has received a disconnect notice from their utility/fuel provider.

LIHEAP is available to adult tribal members that are residents of the State of Oklahoma and must meet the federal income guidelines. The tribal member must be listed on the utility bill or on a joint account. Funding is limited under this assistance and priority is still given to the vulnerable households which include elders, disabled members in the home, and small children (ages 5 and younger) in the home.

Tribal members that have used LIHEAP Assistance this funding year (Oct. 2023-present) from DHS or any other tribal services will not be eligible through our program. LIHEAP does not help with services that have already been disconnected and this funding will not pay for reconnect fees.

To participate in the LIHEAP program, applications may be assessed online on the tribe’s website (www.wichitatribe.com) or by request at 405-247-8620. Applications for the LIHEAP program must be
submitted to the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes ARPA Department by U.S. mail or drop off in person or submitting completed application by email to: ARPAdepartment@wichitatribe.com
