On October 5th, 2023, President Terri Parton traveled to OKC to attend the American Dental Therapy Association Conference to advocate for DHAT (Dental Health Aid Therapist).
Dental Health Aide Therapists (DHATs) provide professional and culturally competent dental care and prevention services, fighting the decades-long epidemic of oral suffering and disease and improving access to dental care for Native people.
A DHAT is a dental team member who works under the supervision of a licensed dentist providing a limited range of services. Those services include patient and community-based preventive dental services, basic restorations and uncomplicated extractions.*
Some tribes and other organizations are currently advocating for DHATs to be trained and accredited in the lower 48 states. The Panel Discussion was “Tribal Voices: Advancing Self-Determination Through Dental Therapy”.
The moderator was Bruce Pratt. The panelists of the event were Angela Johnson, Dr. Robert Crittenden, President Terri Parton and Dr. Miranda Davis. Alongside them is keynote speaker, Brian Cladoospy, former President of NCAI and former Chairman of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community. (Left to right as pictured.)
