2023 YES OK_Summer Program Flyer

YES Oklahoma AIMs

Aim 1 -  YES Oklahoma is a NIH funded program (in partnership with the Health Sciences Center and OSU) designed to recruit Native American students into healthcare and STEM careers.  Every summer we will host a cohort of up to 12 scholars who will participate in an 8-week STEM experience on OU's Norman and HSC campuses.  Scholars will earn concurrent enrollment credit, participate in professional development activities, work with mentors in state-of-the-art laboratories, and have hands-on lab experiences in a variety of settings.  We will be able to provide our scholars: a stipend, free tuition and fees, free room and board while on campus, and transportation to lab sites.  We also have fun trips and activities planned for the scholars throughout the summer.

Aim 2 - YES Oklahoma Instructors: a cohort of high school teachers from partner schools will participate in an 8-week summer training program that will include research and place-based/ culturally relevant curriculum development. Teachers will be provided a monthly stipend and transportation costs.

Aim 3  - YES Oklahoma Outreach Team: composed of YES Oklahoma Scholars, Instructors, Trainees, and PIs. The Outreach Team will host events with families, communities, and high schools, and participate in statewide events promoting STEM and cancer prevention and screening. We are interested in expanding this plan, to include language revitalization efforts in the form of public health announcements.
