Rock Springs Cemetery is a place of honor, history, and deep significance for Wichita tribal citizens and the community. By choosing to volunteer, you are helping preserve this important site with care and respect.

Project Information

Project: Rock Springs Cemetery Cleanup
Purpose: Grounds and grass maintenance to help preserve and care for the cemetery

Participation is voluntary and unpaid. No compensation will be provided for this activity.

You and/or your family will be assigned a section of the cemetery to help care for once the application period closes. If you have preferences for specific areas or family plots you would like to maintain, please share them with us—we will do our best to honor everyone’s requests.

This project is rooted in our commitment to caring for our loved ones and honoring those who may not have family nearby or able to tend to their gravesites. It truly takes a community to keep this sacred place cared for. Your willingness to volunteer reflects the compassion and responsibility that strengthen us as Wichita people. Thank you for your dedication to this effort.

What to Expect as a Volunteer

Volunteers may assist with activities such as:

Picking up trash and debris
Trimming grass and weeds around gravesites and pathways
Gently clearing leaves and dirt from around headstones
Performing basic grounds maintenance as assigned

This work may involve physical activity including bending, lifting, raking, trimming, or working near lawn equipment.

Volunteer Responsibilities*

To help protect the cemetery and ensure everyone’s safety, I agree to:

Respect the Cemetery

Treat all graves, headstones, markers, fencing, and cultural or personal items with care and dignity
Avoid walking directly over graves whenever possible
Keep noise at a respectful level

Follow Instructions

Work only in assigned areas
Use tools and equipment safely and only as instructed
Supervise any youth or minors in my care

Headstone Care

Do not lean on, move, push, clean, or attempt to straighten headstones
Do not use chemicals, metal tools, or pressure washers
Immediately report any unstable or damaged stones to staff

Safety

Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear
Stay hydrated and take breaks as needed
Remain alert to uneven ground, insects, wildlife, or other hazards

I voluntarily choose to participate with full knowledge of these responsibilities.

Property Damage Responsibility*

I understand that all cemetery property must be handled carefully. If I cause damage—accidental or intentional—to any headstone, marker, or cemetery property, I agree to be responsible for the cost of repair or restoration, as determined by Rock Springs Cemetery staff or the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes.

Risks and Assumption of Risk*

I understand that participation may involve risks, including:

Uneven ground, tripping hazards, or fragile stones
Exposure to insects, plants, allergens, heat, or sun
Use of hand or power tools

I voluntarily choose to participate with full knowledge of these risks.

Medical Care*

In the event of an emergency, I give permission for staff or volunteers to seek medical assistance for me. I understand that I am responsible for any medical costs that may arise.

Release of Liability*

I release and hold harmless The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, Rock Spring Baptist Church, and all associated staff and volunteers from liability for injury or property damage related to my participation, except where prohibited by law.

Yes, I give permission for photos or videos of me taken during the cleanup to be used for program reporting, community outreach, or educational purposes.
