We are thrilled to share the success of “taca:kira:kʔickskwa:wa:stic / (We had dreams): Art by Wichitas and Descendants” opening reception that took place at Tribes Gallery in Norman, on Saturday, January 11th, 2025.
The title, taca:kira:kʔickskwa:wa:stic (We had dreams) was suggested by Cultural Planner, Gary McAdams (Wichita and Affiliated Tribes), since art is a visualization of dreams. He says, “kirikirʔi:s believe that all knowledge comes from kinnike:sas and that many times this knowledge comes to us in the form of dreams.”
The show was co-curated by Preservation Administrator, Robin Williams (Wichita/Caddo) and America Meredith (Cherokee Nation) and included established and emerging artists, elders and youth. A total of 21 talented artists, including some amazing young creatives, showcased their artwork, celebrating the rich culture and traditions of the Wichita people.
It was an inspiring event filled with incredible talent, passion, and connection, reminding us all of the power of art in preserving and sharing our heritage. We are so proud of everyone who participated and showed their creativity! The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes hope to make this an annual event with even more Wichita Artists.
The show runs through February 2nd, so if you didn’t make it to the reception, you still have time to see it. The Curators/Artists Talk for the show is this Sunday, January 19, from 2:00–4:00pm (also) at Tribes Gallery – 512 W. Main St., Norman, OK.
As Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Vice President Tasha Mousseau shared with those in attendance, “We are our ancestors’ dreams and our future generations are our dreams. By having a show like this we are uplifting our culture past, present, and future.”
